March 21, 2004 2303hrs:
Units from Fire 12, EMS 12, EMS 3, and the Medic Unit were dispatched for a report of a 12-day old infant not breathing on Kingfisher Court in the Lancaster Neighborhood. Communications advised the responding units that CPR instructions were being given over the phone. Fire 12 Sergeant John Stewart arrived within a minute of the call from his residence less than a block away and took over CPR from the father. CRT Kris Klinikowski and Firefighter David "Klink" Klinikowski arrived shortly after by POV, along with Sergeant Chris Foss and F/F Jason Hardesty in Command Unit 12, and assisted with gathering medical information on the baby and calming the family. Both Ambulances and the Medic Unit arrived on scene simultaneously. The infant was rushed out to the EMS units and transported Priority One to Civista Medical Center in La Plata. Doctors and staff at the hospital worked on reviving the infant for some time. Due to the combined efforts of the EMS crews and the hospital staff, the infant was successfully revived. The Emergency Neo-Natal unit from Children's Hospital in Washington D.C. was called and responded to CMC with their special transport vehicle. The infant was then taken to Children's Hospital and placed in the Neo-natal intensive care unit. The last update received from Children's stated the infant is still in critical condition and the family was remaining around-the-clock at bedside.
On behalf of all the members of the Waldorf VFD, especially those who were involved in this incident, we extend our thoughts and prayers to the infant and family members for a successful outcome.
Responding Units: Engine 121, Command Unit 12, Ambulance 129, Ambulance 37, and Medic 21.
