Fire Damages Apartment Building
in Bannister Neighborhood

June 18, 2004 1704 hrs:

Units from Waldorf were dispatched for a reported fire in a multi-family dwelling on Hamilton Place in the Bannister neighborhood. First-arriving Chief 3A found a 2-story apartment building with light smoke showing from Apartment 101. Engine 32 arrived moments later and stretched a 1-¾" handline into the ground floor apartment. After a quick search for the source of the smoke, firefighters located the fire in the exterior wall between the furnace room and the back patio area. Engine 122 arrived on scene and was assigned to check for possible extension to the 2nd floor apartment directly above the fire. La Plata Truck 1 was assigned to the roof for possible ventilation, Hughesville Engine 22 assisted with secondary searches of the building, and Brandywine Squad 40 was assigned to be the RIT team. It was determined the fire was contained to the wall in Apartment 101 only and Command held the units from Co 3, 12, and Truck 1 for overhaul and pickup. The Office of the State Fire Marshall was requested to respond to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. One firefighter from Truck 1 sustained a hand injury and was transported to Civista Medical Center by Ambulance 38. Units cleared the scene within an hour and returned to quarters.
