Just as units were preparing to clear the motor vehicle collision at Crain Highway and Leonardtown Road, Communications dispatch Fire 3 for an automatic fire alarm at the Hong Kong Buffet. A CCSO unit that was in the area arrived on scene and advised there was smoke inside the building. Rescue Squad 3, Engine 32, and Engine 121 responded to the restaurant, located only one traffic light south of their location, as the assignment was upgraded to a building fire box alarm. Units arrived on the scene with moderate smoke conditions visible from the rooftop vents. Firefighters forced entry into the restaurant and advanced a 1-¾" handline into the building. The fire was located in a storage room in the kitchen area and quickly knocked down. Engine 121's crew was assigned to ventilate the rooftop, along with La Plata Truck 1. Baden Engine 361 operated on the scene as the RIT unit and assisted with overhaul. Firefighters made an extensive check of the attic area and roof vents to ensure the fire had not spread to other areas of the structure. The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshall was requested to respond to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. Units cleared the scene at 0322hrs and returned to quarters.
