October 14, 2003 1451hrs:
The combined efforts of several area emergency agencies resulted in a successful AED save. Waldorf units, along with MSP, CCSO, and the Medic Unit, were alerted for a subject stopped breathing at Howard's Billiards on Crain Highway. An off-duty MSP Trooper was in the area at the time of the call and was the first emergency responder to arrive on the scene. Inside the establishment, Trooper Murphy found a 62 year-old male who had collapsed on the floor, striking a pool table in the process. Trooper Murphy checked the patient and found him in full cardiac arrest. Trooper Murphy immediately started CPR as additional units from the Sheriff's Office arrived on scene to assist. Rescue Squad 3 arrived within minutes of the call and immediately applied an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on the patient. The AED detected a shockable rhythm and a shock was applied to the patient. On a second attempt, the AED detected a non-shockable rhythm and CPR was continued. Ambulance 399, Paramedic Ambulance 129, and Medic 21 arrived on the scene and the patient was rapidly loaded for transport to the Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, MD. While enroute to the hospital, Paramedics were successful in regaining a pulse on the patient. As the units cleared the hospital, word was received that the patient was in critical but stable condition.
