Pedestrian Struck on Crain Highway

November 1, 2003 1939hrs:

Units were dispatched for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on Crain Highway in front of Jerry's Sub Shop. Rescue Squad 3 and Chief 3B, DJ Mills, arrived on scene to find a male subject lying in the northbound lanes of Crain Highway with massive head injuries. A helicopter was immediately requested and the assignment was upgraded to a Priority One response. The Squad crew began assessing the patient and placed him on a backboard as Ambulance 37 and Ambulance 129 arrived on scene. Paramedic Joe Summers, who was at a nearby restaurant, responded to the scene in his personal vehicle and worked with the EMS units to provide ALS care. Engine 33 setup a landing site on the scene in the northbound lanes for MSP Trooper 2. Due to the seriousness of the patient's head injury, the MSP Flight Medic performed a procedure called RSI, Rapid Sequence Intubation, prior to loading in the helicopter. Trooper 2 transported the patient to Prince Georges Trauma Center. Crain Highway was closed for several hours while the MSP Reconstruction Team investigated the collision. Units from Waldorf cleared the scene at 2037 hours and returned to quarters.
