Welding Explosion Leaves
One Worker in Critical Condition

November 11, 2003 0730hrs:

Units were dispatched to MDL Manufacturing Industries on Graphics Drive for a report of an explosion with fire. While enroute, Dispatch advised that a worker was welding on a 55-gallon drum inside the building when it exploded and Sheriffs Office units were on scene reporting the fire was out. Engine 33 and Engine 32 arrived on scene moments later to find a large one-story warehouse-type structure with an unknown haze inside. The injured worker was taken to Paramedic Ambulance 38 as Firefighters met with the management of the building. After verifying there was not a hazardous materials incident, crews entered the building and located the site of the explosion. A 2-1/2lb fire extinguisher had been discharged over the site and there was no extension of fire. The scene was turned over to the Sheriffs Office for investigation. MSP Trooper 2 transported the injured worker in critical condition to Baltimore Shock Trauma. Units cleared the scene and returned to quarters at 0823hrs.

Mutual Aid Units: Brandwine Engine 401, Bel Alton Engine 101, La Plata Truck 1, Hughesville Squad 2, Bryans Road Truck 11 and Ambulance 119, and Charles Co. Rescue Squad Paramedic Ambulance 517.


Update 11/11/2003 1730hrs: It is with deep regret to announce the worker who was critically injured succumbed to his injuries this afternoon. The family of the worker contacted the Waldorf Fire Dept and advised that he was also an active member of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department in St Mary's County. On behalf of all the members of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, we would like to extend our condolences to the worker's family and the members of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department.
