Working Building Fire in Hughesville

August 5, 2003 2400hrs:

Waldorf units were alerted for a commercial building fire on Leonardtown Road in Hughesville. Hughesville Ambulance 28, returning from Civista Medical Center in La Plata, radioed that they were on the scene of an antique items store with smoke showing. The structure fire assignment was dispatch, bringing Waldorf Truck 3 and Engine 121 to the scene. Additional resources were dispatched after several companies failed to respond, bringing Engine 31 and Tanker 12 on the assignment. Truck 3 arrived on scene only moments after the first engine from Hughesville. Truck 3's crew, led by Captain Ryan Pagel, made the first entry into the structure with the crew from Hughesville Engine 23. As E-23's crew advanced their line, Truck 3's crew worked to ventilate the structure and perform the primary search. F/Fs Keith Burns and Robert Smith went to the roof and cut several holes with the Cutter's Edge saw while E-23 put a knock on the first floor. After further investigation, there was a small amount of fire located on the second floor and attic area. Truck 3's crew, along with La Plata Truck 1, extinguished the remaining fire. Engine 121 and Engine 31 provided manpower to assist with salvage and overhaul. Tanker 12 stood by on scene to supply E-23 with water. Crews returned to quarters around 0230 hours.
