Overturned Vehicle with One Trapped
on Leonardtown Road in Hughesville

September 30, 2003 1618hrs:

Units were alerted for a motor vehicle rollover with one subject trapped beneath a pickup truck on Leonardtown Road near La Plata Road (Rt 488). Due to a working fire in Newburg, most of the area departments already had apparatus dedicated so additional departments were alerted to respond on this call. Hughesville Squad 2 and Ambulance 27 arrived on scene with an overturned pickup truck in a ditch with one confirmed trapped. Engine 33 arrived moments later and assisted Squad 2's crew with stabilizing the vehicle with cribbing. A passerby had stopped shortly after the rollover had occurred and attached 2 cargo straps from his personal vehicle to the underside of the truck, preventing it from rolling further into the ditch. Squad 2 setup 2 additional struts on the opposite side of the vehicle as Engine 33's crew setup airbags to lift the vehicle off the patient. Sgt Josh Ringgold and F/f David Klinikowski positioned airbags on both sides of the patient while F/F James Thorne provided medical attention to the trapped patient. Airbags were inflated slowly until there was enough room to slide the patient from underneath the vehicle. F/Fs Klinikowski, Thorne, and Justin Zdobysz removed the patient from under the vehicle, where he was placed on a backboard and handed over to the crew from Ambulance 27 and Medic 21. The patient was flown by MSP Trooper 2 to a trauma center in Washington DC. The cause of the rollover was believed to have occurred when a strap broke on the trailer the truck was towing, causing the weight of the farm tractor to shift.

Responding Units: Hughesville Squad 2, Waldorf Engine 33, Mechanicsville Squad 2, La Plata Engine 13, Benedict Engine 52, Ambulance 27, Waldorf EMS 3, Medic 21, and MSP Trooper 2.
