reported by Assistant Chief John Durrer

On March 27, 2010 at 1741 hours, units were dispatched for a reported motorcycle accident on Crain Highway in front of Outback Steak House. Chief 3A and Engine 32 advised Charles County Communications they were responding and communications answered and advised that the call was being upgraded to Priorty 1, now with a report of subject trapped under a vehicle. Chief 3A and Engine 32 arrived with a subject pinned under the front of a vehicle. Chief 3A, the crew of Engine 32 and several police officers that were on the scene lifted the vehicle off of the subject. At that time the subject had no respirations or pulse. Chief 3A reported a "Trauma Code" to the remaining units responding. As Engine 32's crew started patient care the subject took a shallow breath, stabilization was established, and a helicopter was requested. With EMS crews now providing patient care and more personnel on the scene the occupants of the other vehicles were checked. One of the helicopters was requested for a 2 yr. old child with facial injuries caused by the impact of the motorcycle into the passenger area where the child was sitting. All other patients with the exception of the child and the operator of the motorcycle refused treatment and transport. Engine 33 set up the landing site for Trooper 2 and Eagle 1 in the northbound lanes of Route 301, just north of the accident. As units assisted the MSP reconstruction unit, it was learned that the operator of the motorcycle succumbed to his injuries at the trauma center upon arrival.
