June 5, 1135 hrs | |||
Just before the noon lunch hour, Station 3 was alerted to St. Charles Pkwy.
and St. Thomas Dr. for the motor vehicle collision. E-31 already on the air
returning from another call, responded and while they were going on the scene
communications advised that they had a report of one trapped. E-31 confirmed
they had one trapped by the lake. Engine 31 stabilized the vehicle and began
the extrication process. Engine Co. 12 was the only company alerted to the
call for the upgrade of the assignment bringing Rescue Engine 121. Luckily a
Chief officer from 3 heard the radio transmissions on the tac-channel and
requested that the first due company be re-alerted also. After the first due
company was re-alerted, Squad 3, Chief 3, 3A, and 3B responded on the call
with Chief 3A assuming the Command, Chief 3 having safety, and Chief 3B had
the rescue operations. The patient was removed from the vehicle by E-31 and
Squad 3 in about 10 minutes while Rescue Engine 121 was sent to the L.Z.
Units operated on the scene for about 40 minutes.
