The Hazmat assignment was dispatched for a report of an explosion involving pool chemicals on Peach Tree Road in the Pinefield Subdivision. While enroute, Communications advised a subject was reportedly working with pool chemicals in the backyard when it exploded. Upon arrival, Engine 33's crew advanced a 1-¾" handline to the backyard to investigate the reported explosion while Rescue Squad 3's crew, along with Chiefs 3 & 3A, went to evaluate the patient. The victim was found in the shower washing the chemicals off his body and relatively uninjured. After donning SCBA equipment, Engine 33's crew found a large quantity of powdered pool shock chlorine on the cement around the pool. After consulting the manufacturer's instructions, the decision was made to wash the chemicals into the pool with the handline. The victim refused medical treatment with Ambulance 37 and signed a release. The cause of the explosion was determined to be from 2 different pool shock chemicals being mixed together.
