Involving a Sheriff's Department Unit

July 17, 2004 2023 hrs:

Units from Waldorf were dispatched for a reported head-on motor vehicle collision involving a Charles County Sheriffs Office unit on Middletown Road near Rocky Road Place. While units were enroute, one of the injured deputies was able to exit the cruiser and check on the condition of the occupants of the second vehicle. A third vehicle came upon the collision and swerved to avoid striking the 2 vehicles. The third vehicle went up the embankment and rolled onto its side. The 3 occupants of the third vehicle were all able to climb out on their own with only minor cuts and bruises. Ambulance 128 arrived on scene within minutes of the call and began assessing the injured victims. EMS Chief 3B, Vernon Monday, arrived on Ambulance 37 and setup the triage system. Engine 121 arrived shortly after and assisted the EMS units with patient triage. A total of 7 patients were assessed and 3 additional ambulances were requested to respond. The decision was made to flyout the 2nd deputy sheriff and MSP Trooper 2 was dispatched to the scene. Engine 121 setup a landing site at Westlake High School for the helicopter. The injured deputy was flown to Prince Georges Hospital Center. The other deputy was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with injuries to the hand. 2 patients from the second vehicle were also transported by ambulance while the 3 occupants of the third vehicle all signed medical releases.
