Hurricane Irene Batters Tri-County Area

August 27, 2011 0600hrs through August 28, 2011 1800hrs

Hurrican Irene arrived in the Southern Maryland region packing winds averaging 60-65 miles an hour with sustained gusts up to 80-85mph (Category 1 Hurricane). Despite the heavy rains that pounded the region, the Tri-county area did not suffer the extreme flooding that was anticipated. Both Fire Divisions were kept busy responding to calls ranging from trees blocking roads, trees down on houses, wires down, gas leaks inside residences, and several possible structure fires. Both EMS Divisions responded to numerous medical emergencies ranging from injured subjects to Priority 1 chest pains. Every piece of apparatus in the Waldorf VFD fleet responded at some point during the storm. Unfortunately, Truck 3 and Brush 3 suffered mechanical failures and were placed out of service. However, not one call for assistance was missed by our members. Below are some statistics from each division:
