to PG County for One Trapped

August 16, 2004 1803 hrs:

Rescue Squad 3 was dispatched mutual aid to Accokeek Co. 24 in Prince Georges County for a motor vehicle collision with reported entrapment on Accokeek Road in the area of Garner Road. Squad 3 arrived moments behind Brandywine Squad 40 to find a single-vehicle wrapped around a tree on the edge of a swamp. The single occupant was severely entangled in the wreckage and unconscious upon arrival. Squad 3's crew deployed all the Hurst tools on the unit and worked alongside the crews from Squad 40 & Accokeek Engine 241. Squad 3's crew removed the passenger side door and assisted with the removal of the roof. Once access was gained to the patient, it was determined the victim's left arm was pinned between the vehicle and the tree. Also, both of the victim's legs were severely pinned under the dashboard. Crews used the 18", 30", & 60" Rams from both Squads to successfully roll the dashboard clear of the victim's legs and feet. Squad 40 used the 32A Spreaders to free the victim's arm from between the vehicle and the tree. Once the victim was completely free, crews performed a vertical removal of the patient onto a backboard and transferred him to the care of waiting Medics. The patient was flown to a Washington DC trauma center with severe life-threatening injuries. Crews spent 20 minutes taking up equipment and sorting out all the different tools utilized to extricate the victim.

Just as Rescue Squad 3 was going back in service, Charles County Communications dispatched a motor vehicle collision with subjects trapped on Acton Lane & Commerce Drive. Engine 33 arrived on scene with a two-vehicle collision with one overturned and one subject trapped. Squad 3 arrived on scene shortly after. The crew quickly deployed the Rescue 42 stabilization struts to secure the overturned pickup truck. After the vehicle was stabilized, the Hurst Extractor Cutter was used to remove the roof. The trapped victim was uninjured and climbed out of the vehicle on his own. EMS units transported one victim from the second vehicle to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Units picked up equipment and returned to quarters a short time later.
