Waldorf volunteers were dispatched for an MVA on Leonardtown Road at Post Office Road, with one reported unconscious. While enroute, Communications advised that there was a possible Priority 4 at the scene. RS-3 arrived on the scene, as County police were performing CPR on an elderly male in one of the involved vehicles. RS-3 found a weak pulse and shallow breathing and continued to monitor the patient's rhythm and assisted ventilations. EMS crews arrived and took over patient care, immmediately calling for a medivac helicopter. The patient went into cardiac arrest prior to the helicopter landing, and CPR was again administered. The patient was evaluated by the flight medic and the decision was made to fly him to a trauma ceneter. The patient succumbed to his injuries after arriving at the hospital.
The patient from the second vehicle, the mother and wife of DC Firefighters, was treated by EMS personnel for non-life threatening injuries. She was transported by Ambulance to Southern Maryland Hospital Center. She was released and is recovering at home.
Chief 3B had the command, and the landing zone was set up by E-31.
