Heavy Rains Bring a Deluge of Calls

November 16, 2006
reported by PIO/Lt. Jeff Duer

Thursday November 16th around 1458 hours, numerous calls started pouring into the Charles County 911 system. Heavy rain and thunderstorms had moved into the immediate area, dumping more than 3 inches of water in a short time, accompanied by strong winds. Engine Companies 3 and 12 were alerted for occupied vehicles submerged in water, house fires, flooded conditions, and of course - the infamous "trees down". In a three hour period, over 30 storm-related calls were answered in the Waldorf area alone. Several roads were closed for hours and Charles County Public Schools had cancelled all evening activities. Damage estimates are not available at this time, and no significant injuries were reported. A special thanks goes out to Station 8 (Marbury) for having Rescue 8, Utility 8, the 2 boats, stage at Fire 3 and for their assistance during the chaos.
