RE-123 Involved in MVC on Berry Road

On Tuesday Decemeber 30th, 2008 at 10:09am Rescue Engine 123 who was returning from a previous call had stopped in the left turn lane of Berry Road preparing to make the turn onto Bunker Hill Road. The left turn arrow at the time was red and the engine was at a complete stop awaiting the signal to make the turn. When a vehicle with a single occupant struck the engine in the right rear tail board area. The occupant of the vehicle striking the engine was entrapped in the vehicle. A pick-up truck stopped with a minor impact to the initial striking vehicle on the driver side door. A fourth vehicle then struck the pick up truck, causing a second impact to the same driver side door. Rescue Engine 123 contacted communications to advise them of the situation. Tower 824, Engine 33, Squad 3, Squad 7,and Engine 112 responded to the incident. Chief 12B handled the command, while Chief 12A and Chief 3A rendered assistance. The crew from RE-123 initially started extricating the victim from the first vehicle, but were relieved of their duties and assessed for injuries themselves. Tower 824, Engine 33, and Squad 3 relieved RE-123 from the extrication operations, while Engine 112 set up the landing zone. The entrapped victim was treated by Paramedic 118. Patient care was turned over to Trooper 2, and the entrapped victim was transported to Prince Georges Trauma Center as a Catagory "A" patient. Ambulance 519 treated, and transported the victim in the fourth vehicle striking the pick-up truck to Civista Medical Center. All Firefighters on Rescue Engine 123 were seat belted in, and only one Firefighter from Rescue Engine 123 was transported to Civista Medical Center with minor injuries.
