Waldorf VFD's Vice President and Firefighter/EMT Matt Stevens has been named the recipient of the 2008 "Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year" award. State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard made the presentation during a ceremony at the Maryland State Firemen's Association annual convention in Ocean City on Tuesday, June 16, 2009.
Matt was cited for his achievement as a fire investigator and for his commitment to initiative, teamwork, and eagerness in accepting additional responsibility. Some of his duties have included: giving presentations and demonstrations to civic groups across the State, working as a field training officer, serving as a bomb technician, teaching an arson and explosives course at the regional police academy, and serving as a member of important committees.
Stevens was nominated by his supervisor Michael J. Mulligan. "Matt not only excelled in his investigative work but, provided continued guidance and assistance to fellow Deputies who worked in the region." His investigative skills resulted in a 68 percent closure rate for both fire and explosive criminal investigations, far exceeding the national average.
Commenting on his service to the citizens of Maryland, State Fire Marshal Barnard said, "Matt Stevens is an outstanding Deputy State Fire Marshal and his continued professionalism is a credit to our Agency." A nationally certified explosive technician, Matt also holds professional certifications as a fire investigator and fire inspector.
