Ambulance 127 Dedicated to

Emergency Medical Technician

Tonya Michelle Mallard

The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, Company 12, dedicated their newest Ambulance on Sunday April 19th, 2009 to EMS Sergeant Tonya Mallard, who was one of four to perish in the crash on Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 2 in September 2008. Sergeant Tonya Mallard made the ultimate sacrifice while providing care for two young individuals who were involved in a car accident that late September night. Ambulance 128 is the ambulance that Tonya was riding to the scene of the accident in that fateful night. Ambulance 128 was scheduled to be replaced at the end of the year, so the membership of the EMS Division 12 decided to retire the number early in honor of Tonya.
With a new ambulance coming in, the decision was made by EMS 12 to renumber the new ambulance to be Ambulance 127. The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department received Ambulance 127 in the middle of February and it was placed in service by the middle of March with the dedication service scheduled for April 19th. It is custom of the Fire/EMS service to dedicate and bless their new apparatus for their fallen comrades.

The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, Company 12, welcomed about seventy guests including Kenneth Mallard (Tonya's Husband), Stella Covert (Tonya's Mother), Tonya’s family, and other special guests to the station for the dedication of Ambulance 127. EMS Deputy Chief Lou Ramer opened the service thanking all for coming. Chief Dan Stevens then spoke of Tonya and how her willingness to help others inspired the young membership of the department. After his words of Tonya, Chief Stevens asked Tonya’s husband Ken and mother Stella to come up and unveil the placard dedicating Ambulance 127 to EMS Sergeant Tonya Mallard. Southern Maryland Firemen's Association Chaplain Deacon George L'Heureux said a prayer, blessing the new ambulance and all of those who will be its passenger. EMS Deputy Chief Lou Ramer then closed the dedication by inviting guests to tour the ambulance and offering refreshments provided by the Auxiliary Division of The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department.
